ABV describes concentration

Alcohol by volume, or ABV, tells you what proportion of a beverage is ethyl alcohol by volume. A bottle marked 40% ABV is not “forty percent alcohol” in every casual sense; it means forty percent of the liquid volume is alcohol under the stated measurement conditions. The number describes concentration, not how much a person consumes.

Proof is a conversion

In the United States, proof is generally twice the ABV: 40% ABV corresponds to 80 proof. Other historical proof systems existed, so context matters when reading old labels or non-U.S. material. Modern labels and responsible-service calculations should use the declared ABV rather than folklore about proof.

Serving size changes the total

Total alcohol depends on both strength and volume. A large pour of lower-strength wine can contain more alcohol than a small pour of spirits. Cocktails complicate intuition because multiple ingredients, dilution, ice melt, and glass size obscure the original measures. The finished drink may taste soft while still containing substantial alcohol.

A standard drink is a reference measure

A standard drink is a public-health reference, not a universal glass. Definitions differ between countries. In the United States, the NIAAA explains a standard drink as containing about 14 grams of pure alcohol. Local health authorities should be used for local guidance, particularly for driving, medication, pregnancy, and individual health conditions.

Measure the ingredients

To compare serves, record the amount of each alcoholic ingredient and its ABV. Online calculators can help, but a measured recipe is the foundation. Do not estimate from colour, sweetness, bitterness, or perceived burn: sugar, temperature, carbonation, and flavour can change perception without changing the alcohol present.

ABV is a factual label tool; proof is a conversion convention; serving size determines exposure. Read all three together, use measured pours, and follow qualified local guidance.
