  • Brown ales are ales made with malts roasted to a brown color, which gives them a dark amber to brown hue.
  • Tend to have a nutty, biscuity, toasty, caramel-like malt flavor from the use of brown malt. May also exhibit chocolate or coffee notes.
  • Originated in England in the 17th century, with styles like London brown ale, Yorkshire brown ale and Belgian brown ale.
  • Often brewed with English yeast strains that contribute a fruity, estery profile.
  • Hopping is moderate to provide balance. Popular varieties are English Goldings, Fuggles and Willamette.
  • Alcohol content is moderate, ranging from 4-6% ABV typically. Bitterness falls between 15-25 IBUs.
  • Body is medium, with a smooth, malty presence. Carbonation is moderate to low.
  • American brown ales are inspired by the English versions but with more hops. Also known as Texas brown ales.
  • Pairs well with grilled or roasted meats, nutty cheeses, rich sauces and desserts like brownies or caramel.
  • Well known commercial examples include Newcastle Brown Ale, Samuel Smith's Nut Brown Ale, and Brooklyn Brown Ale.
  • Making a comeback after falling out of favor in the early 20th century along with other dark beers.
