American IPA
- Originated in the 1980s as American craft brewers put their own spin on the traditional English IPA style
- Tends to have citrusy, piney, tropical fruit hop aromas and flavors from American hop varieties like Cascade, Centennial, Citra, etc.
- Moderate malt backbone provides some sweetness and body to balance the hops, but the hop flavors take center stage
- Medium-bodied and medium gold to amber in color
- Moderate to high bitterness (IBUs of 50-70)
- ABV typically between 5-7.5%
- Less malty and lower alcohol than an Imperial IPA, but more bitter and hop-focused than an English IPA
- Dry finish with crisp, clean hop taste
- Fruity esters from ale yeast are desirable but subdued
- Hoppy flavors diminish quickly, so IPAs are best enjoyed fresh
- Pairs well with burgers, pizza, spicy dishes, sharp cheddar cheese
- Massively popular American craft beer style and the driver of the craft beer craze of recent decades
