American IPA

  • Originated in the 1980s as American craft brewers put their own spin on the traditional English IPA style
  • Tends to have citrusy, piney, tropical fruit hop aromas and flavors from American hop varieties like Cascade, Centennial, Citra, etc.
  • Moderate malt backbone provides some sweetness and body to balance the hops, but the hop flavors take center stage
  • Medium-bodied and medium gold to amber in color
  • Moderate to high bitterness (IBUs of 50-70)
  • ABV typically between 5-7.5%
  • Less malty and lower alcohol than an Imperial IPA, but more bitter and hop-focused than an English IPA
  • Dry finish with crisp, clean hop taste
  • Fruity esters from ale yeast are desirable but subdued
  • Hoppy flavors diminish quickly, so IPAs are best enjoyed fresh
  • Pairs well with burgers, pizza, spicy dishes, sharp cheddar cheese
  • Massively popular American craft beer style and the driver of the craft beer craze of recent decades
